Introducing Carbon Culture Shadowline Roundels – A New Take on the BMW Roundel

For around seven years, our de-chrome BMW roundels have been one of the most popular OEM+ finishing touches we offer.

The idea has always been simple: take the original BMW roundel, remove the bright chrome look and refine it into something cleaner, darker and more suited to a modified BMW without making it look obviously aftermarket.

Over the years, we’ve also produced custom-coloured quadrants for individual builds, but for our latest version, we wanted to do something completely different.

The idea behind Shadowline

The inspiration came from something much simpler than changing colour.

Finish.

Gloss black and matte black behave completely differently under light, and when the two are placed together, you get contrast without needing another colour at all.

That became the basis for our new Shadowline Roundels.

Each badge starts life as a genuine OEM BMW roundel. It is then refinished entirely in gloss black before being precision masked. A matte clear finish is applied over selected areas, and once the masking is removed, the gloss sections are exposed beneath.

The result is a completely black BMW roundel, but with subtle definition created purely through the difference between gloss and matte finishes.

Subtle until the light hits it

From a distance, the roundel appears almost completely black.

Move around the car or let the light catch it, and the gloss detailing begins to appear against the matte sections.

That subtle change is exactly what we wanted.

There is no chrome and no contrasting colour competing with the rest of the car. Instead, the badge retains the familiar BMW design while taking on a much darker, more understated appearance.

Why “Shadowline”?

BMW owners will already recognise the Shadowline name from the darker exterior trim options found across the BMW range.

We felt the name suited the roundels perfectly.

The badges use different black finishes in the same way gloss and satin black details can sit alongside one another elsewhere on the car, creating depth without introducing additional colour.

It also keeps the product firmly within the OEM+ style we’ve always aimed for.

Made in-house

As with our existing de-chrome roundels, every Shadowline Roundel is individually refinished in-house by Carbon Culture.

The process involves significantly more than simply painting a badge black. The masking and finishing stages are what create the final contrast, and accuracy is essential to retain the original BMW detailing.

The end result is deliberately subtle.

For owners who want something darker than our traditional de-chrome roundels, but still want to retain an OEM-style finish, this is the next step.
