BMW F80 M3 Engine Bay Build – Carbon Fibre, CS Bonnet & OEM+ Details
Building a BMW F80 M3 engine bay properly isn’t about simply adding as much carbon fibre as possible.
For us, the goal has always been to create an OEM+ BMW F80 M3 engine bay where every component works together — carbon fibre, gloss black, subtle colour details and factory-inspired finishes.
After years of adding and refining different parts, this Ferrari Red F80 M3 engine bay is finally where we wanted it.
The final pieces were surprisingly simple: refinishing the tired factory cowlings in gloss black and restoring the ageing DRL/headlight modules that were beginning to let the rest of the engine bay down.
BMW F80 M3 / F82 M4 S55 Engine Bay Upgrades
The BMW S55 engine bay has huge potential, but from factory there are a lot of plastics, exposed fixings and functional components that don’t necessarily match the appearance of a modified M3 or M4.
Rather than replacing everything at once, this engine bay has evolved gradually using a combination of genuine BMW M Performance parts, Carbon Culture UK carbon fibre components, aftermarket upgrades and bespoke refinishing.
The finished specification includes:

The result is an engine bay that still feels recognisably BMW, but with considerably more detail.
Refinishing the BMW F80 Engine Bay Cowlings
One of the easiest areas to overlook on an F80 M3 or F82 M4 is the large plastic cowling section towards the rear of the engine bay.
Once the surrounding engine bay has been upgraded with gloss carbon fibre, polished hardware and painted components, the standard textured plastic suddenly becomes much more noticeable.
For this build, the cowlings were removed, properly prepared and professionally refinished in gloss black.
It’s a relatively subtle modification, but it ties the rear of the S55 engine bay into the gloss finishes used across the carbon fibre components and creates a much cleaner overall appearance.
BMW F80 DRL Module Refinishing
Another detail that had started to stand out for the wrong reasons was the condition of the BMW F80 daytime running light / headlight modules.
Years of heat, weather exposure and general ageing had left the original finish looking tired.
On a mostly standard car it might go unnoticed.
Next to a fully detailed carbon fibre engine bay, it didn’t.
Rather than replacing perfectly functional components simply for cosmetic reasons, the modules were removed and refinished to bring them back in line with the rest of the build.
This is exactly the type of small detail that can make the difference between an engine bay containing lots of modified parts and one that actually looks complete
Carbon Fibre S55 Engine Cover
At the centre of the engine bay sits the carbon fibre BMW S55 engine cover.
The factory S55 engine cover is one of the largest visual components when the bonnet is opened, meaning replacing or refinishing it completely changes the appearance of an F80 M3 or F82 M4 engine bay.
The carbon cover is paired with BMW M-inspired detailing and surrounded by additional gloss carbon components to create a consistent finish throughout the bay.
Infinity Design Carbon Fibre Intakes
The Infinity Design carbon fibre intake system adds both performance-focused engineering and another major visual element.
The carbon intake tubes run prominently across either side of the S55 engine bay and complement the surrounding carbon fibre components without making the bay feel overloaded.
Combined with the engine cover, radiator panel and surrounding dress-up parts, they help create the finished OEM+ appearance we were aiming for.
Carbon Fibre Charge Cooler Cover
The S55 charge cooler sits prominently in the centre of the engine bay, making the carbon fibre charge cooler cover another important visual upgrade.
Small additions like this allow traditionally functional components to become part of the overall engine bay design rather than standing out against surrounding carbon fibre.
Carbon Fibre Headlight Covers
The areas above the headlights are another section commonly overlooked when modifying a BMW F80 or F82 engine bay.
Our carbon fibre headlight covers replace the visual impact of the factory plastics and help continue the carbon finish right into the corners of the engine bay.
Combined with the restored DRL modules beneath them, this area now looks considerably cleaner.
Carbon Fibre Radiator Brace & Front Engine Bay Trim
Across the front of the engine bay, the carbon fibre radiator brace / slam panel creates another strong visual transition.
This sits alongside the Carbon Culture UK engine bay dress-up components and removes another large area of standard black plastic from the F80 engine bay.
Because these panels sit immediately behind the kidney grilles and headlights, they’re some of the first components visible when the bonnet is opened.

Sometimes the smallest components make the biggest difference.
The Carbon Culture UK F80/F82 engine bay dress-up kit replaces or enhances many of the factory fixings and exposed details that can otherwise make a modified engine bay look unfinished.
Alongside the Golden Wrench caps, these finishing pieces help create consistency throughout the engine bay rather than leaving OEM bolts, reservoirs and caps distracting from the larger carbon components.
BMW CS-Style Carbon Bonnet
Of course, everything sits underneath one of the biggest changes made to the car — the BMW M Performance CS-style carbon bonnet.
Opening a carbon bonnet onto a fully detailed S55 engine bay creates an entirely different experience compared with lifting the standard aluminium panel.
The exposed carbon structure underneath also becomes part of the engine bay itself, which makes consistency across the components beneath it even more important.
The Finished BMW F80 M3 Engine Bay
After continually changing small details over the years, this feels like the point where this particular F80 engine bay is finally finished.
Not because there physically isn’t anything else that could be changed — there always is.
But because every major area now feels connected.
Ferrari Red bodywork. Gloss black refinished cowlings. Gloss carbon fibre. Subtle BMW M details. Black hardware.
Nothing feels like it has simply been added for the sake of adding another modification.
And that has always been the goal.
