Aston Martin Vanquish Carbon Fibre Repair – Restoring Damaged OEM Carbon

Carbon fibre looks incredible when it’s right, but once it becomes damaged, repairing it properly is a very different process to conventional paint or bodywork.

We recently had this Aston Martin Vanquish in with significant damage to a number of its exposed carbon fibre components. Rather than replacing expensive genuine parts, the aim was to retain and restore the original carbon wherever possible.

The Damage

The damage was concentrated around the lower sections of the car, exactly where splitters, lower bumper sections and carbon trims are most vulnerable.

What may initially look like heavy scratching can quickly become something much more serious. In this case, some areas had been worn through the clear finish and resin layer, with visible damage to the carbon structure beneath.

Unlike painted bodywork, exposed carbon fibre gives you nowhere to hide.

The finished surface has to remain transparent, meaning the carbon weave, repair work and final finish all remain visible. Simply filling the damage and covering it with paint isn’t an option.

Assessing What Can Be Saved

Before carrying out any carbon repair, the first step is determining exactly how far the damage has travelled.

Surface damage can often be refinished relatively simply, but once the resin and carbon fibres themselves have been compromised, the affected areas need to be repaired correctly before any cosmetic refinishing takes place.

Where possible, our priority is always to retain the original component rather than unnecessarily replacing it.

With genuine Aston Martin carbon components, replacement costs can quickly become considerable. More importantly, if an original OEM component can be structurally and cosmetically restored correctly, replacement is often unnecessary.

Repairing Carbon Fibre Properly

Carbon fibre repair is a multi-stage process.

The damaged areas first need to be carefully prepared, removing compromised material while preserving as much of the original component as possible.


Any structural damage is then rebuilt using appropriate composite repair techniques before the surface can begin to be restored.

This stage is particularly important. The objective isn’t simply to make the damage disappear from a distance; the repaired area has to become part of the component again.


Once the carbon structure has been restored, attention turns to the cosmetic side of the repair.

The surface needs to be levelled and stabilised while retaining the appearance of the original carbon weave. This requires considerably more control than a conventional painted repair because every imperfection can potentially remain visible through the finished clear coat.

Restoring the Finish

Once the repair itself is complete, the component can be prepared for refinishing.

The carbon is carefully refinished to restore depth and clarity to the weave before being protected beneath a high-quality clear finish.

This is the point where the transformation really starts to become visible.

Areas that originally appeared heavily scarred, cloudy or physically damaged begin to regain the deep, crisp appearance associated with correctly finished carbon fibre.

Once fully cured, the panels are refined and polished to produce a finish that integrates with the surrounding original carbon.

The Finished Result

The goal with a repair like this isn’t to create something that simply looks better than it did when it arrived.

The goal is to make the previous damage disappear into the component as naturally as possible while retaining the genuine original part.

On this Vanquish, the damaged carbon sections were restored and refinished, allowing the original components to remain on the car rather than being replaced.

From heavily damaged lower edges and worn-through carbon to a clean, deep gloss finish, the difference is substantial.

And importantly, it remains genuine Aston Martin carbon.

Why Repair Carbon Fibre Instead of Replacing It?

Replacement is not always the best solution.

Genuine carbon components on performance and exotic vehicles can be extremely expensive, difficult to source and, in some cases, no longer readily available.

A specialist repair can often:

  • Retain the original OEM component
  • Avoid unnecessary replacement costs
  • Repair structural as well as cosmetic damage
  • Restore the original exposed carbon appearance
  • Preserve correct fitment and factory mounting points
  • Extend the usable life of an otherwise damaged component
